Question Asked by respectful: What cleaning products are safe for my septic tank?
I don’t like to use harsh or environmentally bad products, especially since they kill the enzymes in my septic tank. Does anyone have a list of safe products?

I am a new septic tank user and have gone through the ?’s looking for the answer, but am getting so many conflicting answers that I don’t know what is right. Is Rid-X good, or should I let the natural tank bacteria do its thing? I have read that I should not use powder laundry detergent. Is this correct? What kind of bathroom and kitchen cleaning chemicals can I use. I have always been a big fan of Bleach, but I have read this is bad for the system. Is this correct? I also use CLR for cleaning. Good or bad? What are good cleaning chemicals to use? How about shower soaps and dishwasher soaps? This is too many questions in one (sorry), but just trying to keep my system safe and working properly. A web site link would be great also. Thanks!

rid x can actually help in the long run you can also use oxy clean its a good unclogger

This is just for drain maintenance-
Pour 1/2 C. baking soda down the drain and follow with 3 C. boiling hot water. Let it bubble for a few minutes and then rinse with hot tap water.

I have been in my house for eight years and I have never used a product in my septic system. I am required to get it pumped out every three years and the inspector never brought any issues to me. If you are in doubt, contact a couple of plumbers and see what they say.

I suggest erring on the side of caution. If your septic is installed properly, it should do what it is designed to do. You can easily disrupt its efficiency with many of the wonder products out there. I’m not saying there aren’t additives that will help, just that you be careful and not dump anything down there labeled “septic safe.” Yes, ask a plumber. But ask one who does not sell the product they are recommending.

Rid-X and the like only add bacteria to the system to supposedly make the system work, that is churn and break down solids etc. The same effect can be had by adding a cup or two of buttermilk weekly.

None, that stuff is just a gimmick. Get it pumped once a year.

Yes. Solid human waste. That’s designed to keep the bacteria alive and well. Nothing else does it as well.

You should use liquid washing supplies…….and keep the tolit tissue OUT odf the tolit…..use a waste basket for it…..Lots of cleaning supplies has Septic friendly on them…
